The Journal of the History of Childhood and Youth (JHCY) is internationally recognized and publishes original peer-reviewed academic articles that engage with, and contribute to, the history of childhood and youth. Additionally, the journal publishes book reviews of the most relevant scholarship to the field. Articles that appear in the JHCY apply a wide range of methodologies as well as interdisciplinary approaches to the historical study of children and youth. The journal publishes articles that engage meaningfully with age, childhood, and youth as analytical categories and foreground the experiences of childhood and youth in the past. There are no geographic and/or chronological limits to the research the journal publishes.
The co-editors of the JHCY are Dr. Julia M. Gossard and Dr. Holly N. S. White.
Dr. Julia M. Gossard is an expert in the history of early modern children and youth. She is author of Young Subjects: Children, State-Building, and Social Reform in the Eighteenth-Century French World. She is Associate Dean for Research in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and Associate Professor of History at Utah State University.
Dr. Holly N.S. White specializes in the history of age, childhood, children, and youth in early America. Her first book “Negotiating American Childhood” is forthcoming from the University of Virginia Press. She currently teaches in the history department at William & Mary.
Together, Dr. Gossard and Dr. White have co-edited Engaging Children in Vast Early America and the JHCY Special Issue, “Forum on Double Age in the History of American Childhood and Youth” in the JHCY (Volume 15, No. 3, Fall 2022).
Early career authors, first-time authors, and those new to the history of childhood and youth who are interested in examining youth, childhood, and age as analytical categories should consider submitting materials that fit submission guidelines. Those working on topics of intersectionality and childhood including (but not limited to) race, gender, sexuality, sexual identity, class, (dis)ability, and other identity categories are strongly encouraged to submit their work.
