The Executive Committee of the Society for the History of Children and Youth invites applications for a position as Digital Childhoods editor(s), which is just completing its first year of publication. Digital Childhoods currently has two coeditors and we are open to a similar structure or to working with one person who would take over sole editorial responsibility. Duties include:
– Solicit, edit, and publish short non-peer-reviewed pieces tied to articles published in the Journal of the History of Childhood and Youth in a digital magazine called Digital Childhoods
– Solicit, edit, and publish other short pieces related to the history of childhood and youth, especially when they are timely or related to issues in the field.
– Develop other avenues of publication in Digital Childhoods per editor’s interests.
– Assist authors with sourcing images.
– Respond to email queries.
The magazine is linked from the main webpage, whose primary function remains as a repository for information related to the running of the Society: conferences, the JHCY, membership, announcement of awards, etc., and will remain the responsibility of Will Holub-Moorman, current digital fellow.
The editorship comes with a stipend of $1,500 per annum, which can be split between editors.
The ideal Digital Childhoods editor might be an advanced doctoral student or early career scholar specializing in a topic related to the history of childhood and youth, who can bring a global perspective to the project. Strong writing skills required and some public history writing experience preferred. The role requires some familiarity with basic style guides (for the sake of consistency) and with WordPress/basic web publishing or a willingness to learn. The editor will have the opportunity to build and expand networks with scholars across the globe, and to establish a public profile for themselves in the fields of digital humanities and histories of children and youth.
Start date is negotiable but ideally the new editor(s) would be ready to take on responsibility by the end of October, 2024. The term for the editorship is approximately three years and can be extended. We are open to considering joint applications from two or three editors who would oversee Digital Childhoods collaboratively.
Statement of interest and applications (including relevant experience) should be addressed to the SHCY President, Nick Syrett (syrett@ku.edu) by October 10, 2024.
